Rooms with a View

The challenge presented to the Acacia team on this project was a vast, exposed, and elevated space with gorgeous views but also limited privacy due to an adjacent public path. The owners of the property were avid gardeners and enjoyed outdoor entertaining but felt very exposed to the elements and the pedestrians using the public walkway and thus never ventured out into their garden. There was also a problem with the local deer that frequented the property making a garden a real challenge to grow.

The Acacia team developed a plan that addressed all these concerns by carefully creating a walled garden with black powder-coated aluminum fencing on top of bluestone-capped split stone walls that keep the deer out but do not stop the eye from enjoying the spectacular views across the straight to downtown Victoria and the Olympic Mountains beyond.

The individual rooms complete with sconce lighting, heaters, and a fire bowl allow alfresco dining and year-round enjoyment. The rooms are further enhanced by introducing extensive multi-tier pergola structures over the individual spaces. These serve as shade structures in the summer months, frame the views, and define the outdoor kitchen and patio spaces while at the same time scaling the house elevation and providing an added sense of privacy.

The new landscape design transformed the space from bare, open, and unused to a secluded, secure, and inviting urban oasis.
